Author Visit to Potomac MS!

  Brotherhood
  by A.B. Westrick
Historical fiction will come to life for seventh graders at Potomac Middle School on
Friday, October 10! Nationally acclaimed Author A.B. Westrick will visit our school to share a presentation on her book Brotherhood.  Set in Richmond, Va. during the Reconstruction era, Brotherhood offers a revealing glimpse of life in the former capital of the Confederacy.  It opens as Shad begins teaching simple tailoring skills at a school for African Americans in exchange for reading lessons.  He faces a real predicament when he realizes that he has also inadvertently become a member of the KKK.

We are extremely excited about this opportunity!  It will enhance our student’s understanding of the curriculum objectives on the Reconstruction era, and allow them to interact with a nationally honored, published author.
A.B. Westrick has been a teacher, paralegal, literacy volunteer, administrator, and has coached teams such as Odyssey of the Mind and Reading Olympics.  A graduate of Stanford University and Yale Divinity School, she has also received a Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts in 2011.  She and her family live near Richmond, VA.

Brotherhood
is
… an
ALA/YALSA 2014 Best Book for Young Adults,
… a
Jane Addams Children’s Book Award 2014 honor book for older readers,
… a
National Council for the Social Studies

… a Junior Library Guild selection and
